Artists of the Boro Calendar

Picture
July's "Hydrangeas by a White Fence," painted by Patricia Smythe, was a colorful subject – an important criterion for Pat, who loves color. "I love hydrangeas and have done several paintings of them, all sold," she said.

Fascinated with watercolor painting because of its flexibility, Pat has a studio in her basement, where she does most of her artwork. "I still go to watercolor class once a week at the Barn in Ridgewood," she adds, declaring "no two artists paint the same."

A Glen Rock resident since 1979, Pat has exhibited widely in the area, with shows at the Barn, Valley Hospital and at several local libraries. She sees watercolor painting as "an amazing outlet," where she can create her own world of beautiful Images.

With a 40-year career as an Art Director at various publishing houses (Harcourt Brace, MacMillian, and Pearson) to her credit and retired since 2013, Pat includes graphic arts and book design among her skills. As an art major at Pratt Institute, she found that painting was "relaxing."
