October's "Sunset on the Marsh," painted by Peter Liman, is a scene from Cape Porpoise, Maine. As an admirer of sunsets of all seasons, Peter came upon this one unexpectedly, so he sketched it and itemized its predominant colors in Maine, then rendered a painting back in his Big Hollow studio in upstate New York.

The Maine sunset was on display at September 25's Arts Fest event but did not sell. "The crowd seemed to prefer my less expensive gyclee prints," he said, "but I was pleased that so many people had fine compliments about my oil paintings."

Peter's articulated brush strokes and bold color capture his love of American scenery. "I love unique skies and sunsets. Thankfully, there are sunsets in all four seasons to capture my imagination."

His gallery and studio in the upper Catskills were in the same area that birthed the iconic 1850s Hudson River School, a group of landscape painters from New York City who embraced idealized naturalism.

Peter has lived in Glen Rock with wife, Regina, since 2000 and has been a professional artist since 2001. In his former life, he was a c
onsumer and convalescent products executive. In 2012, a lung cancer diagnosis – malignant pleural mesothelioma – made painting and creating a way to find peace, and he began showing his paintings at New Jersey hospitals, hoping that his creations could alleviate patients' anxiety and fear.

"My philosophy is to never give up HOPE," he says, "and to encourage others to fulfill the purpose in their lives and seek enjoyment and fulfillment every day."

To that end, Peter wrote "The Monet of the Mountaintop." He put the book together during the pandemic as a legacy for his family and friends, with the help of a graphic designer/photographer friend who had photographed most of his paintings over the years .

Now that he's moved his gallery and studio from Maplecrest (upstate) to Glen Rock, Peter intends to set up a new studio here. To see more of his work, look for future exhibits at local shows and galleries or check out his book on Apple Books.
